As the director of the series Anno Hideaki explains, the name “Rei” is a pun on the basis of the character “零”, which reads as “ray” or “zero” and translates as “zero” (while Rei is piloting Evangelion-00, whose name is also spelled character “零”) and taken from the anime “Sailor Moon” from Ray Hino. The surname “Ayanami” was given by Rei in honor of the ship of the Imperial Navy of Japan. The basis of appearance, as explained in an interview published in the second volume of the manga, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, was laid down by Ukin from Sadamoto’s old story “Koto no they” (Japanese 孤島 の 鬼 Koto : but they), written by him for Newtype magazine. 1280x960500x686
